Northstar (Bermuda) Investor from Taiwan Sues Cetera for Up to $5,000,000

Shepherd Smith Edwards and Kantas Is Representing This Elderly Investor

Shepherd Smith Edwards and Kantas has filed a FINRA arbitration claim seeking up to $5 million from Cetera Investment Services on behalf of a 75-year-old Taiwanese investor alleging unsuitability and overconcentration in Northstar Financial Services (Bermuda). Because recovering funds directly from the defunct offshore entity is unlikely, the firm is helping international and U.S. investors pursue financial recovery by holding the brokerage firms that sold these unsafe products accountable.

Once again, our Northstar Financial Services (Bermuda) loss attorneys have filed a claim on behalf of an non-US citizen against Cetera Investment Services. This time, the Claimant is a 75-year-old who lives in Taiwan. His US broker was Hui “Celia” Zhang, who he is accusing of making unsuitable investment recommendations and overconcentrating a large portion of his assets in this now defunct offshore entity.

Shepherd Smith Edwards and Kantas (investorlawyers.com) is representing this international investor in FINRA arbitration. Our Client is suing Cetera for up to $5,000,000, plus interest and costs, after suffering serious losses.  In his FINRA lawsuit, the senior investor is alleging the following:

  • Excessive concentration
  • Unsuitability
  • Misrepresentations and omissions
  • Gross lack of supervision for the entirety of the account
  • Negligence
  • Possible fraud
  • Acting in bad faith up to the present
  • Gross negligence
  • Breach of contract
  • Breach of fiduciary duty
  • Vicarious liability

Hui “Celia” Zhang has worked 14 years in the industry. The California financial advisor is now an Independent Financial Group broker and investment adviser. Celia Zhang’s BrokerCheck CRD notes at least six other customer disputes that were settled or are still pending. The Claimants have alleged unsuitability and misrepresentations.

Why Are Investors Suing Over Their Northstar (Bermuda) Losses?

  • Owner Greg Lindberg purportedly repurposed this offshore entity’s assets elsewhere.
  • Monthly investor redemptions in Northstar Financial Services (Bermuda) were suspended and so were income payments.
  • In 2024, Lindberg pleaded guilty to a $2B annuity fraud.
  • The company filed for Chapter bankruptcy at the end of 2020.
  • Seeing as recouping investor losses from Northstar (Bermuda) continues to prove challenging, an investor’s best chance of financial recovery is to sue broker that sold them these offshore annuities.
  • Financial and regulatory problems involving Northstar Financial Services (Bermuda) were brewing for a long time, as well as questions of whether this was a safe investment. Brokers either ignored the red flags, or, if they didn’t recognize them then they should have paid attention. Instead, many financial advisors went on to unsuitably recommend this ill-protected product to international investors.

Many of the investors we represent say they were blindsided by the risks and their resulting investment losses. A lot of the Claimants who are now suing their broker-dealer maintain that they were looking for a safe haven for their assets in the US. Instead, many of them have suffered devastating investment losses.
